Business Lessons From "The Tortoise and the Hare"

We all know the fable of the tortoise and the hare. This fable teaches us how the power of consistent, steady effort rather than spurts of energy, distractions, and pride will get us across the finish line. If you have never read the fable, follow this link - Aesop Fables .

As a business owner, you know the clear lesson -- success rarely comes to those who dash ahead with bursts of energy but rather to those who remain consistent, persistent, and insistent over the long haul. In a world that too often glorifies the “overnight success” and instant gratification, we should find wisdom in slowing down, taking our time, and trusting the process, firmly believing steady progress leads to lasting results.

Biblical Wisdom:

The Bible offers four key truths which align the lesson of the tortoise and the hare.

1. Patience

"But the one who endures to the end will be saved." Matthew 24:13 (ESV)

Data shows that 1 out of every 10 businesses that start up fail within the first year. The ability to endure – pressing forward and overcoming obstacles –is what leads to success. Jesus here teaches us that enduring persistence is one of the keys to race of life. Trusting God’s timing and continuing to press forward, we are more likely to finish strong, just as the tortoise did in the fable.

2. Faithful in Small Things

"One who is faithful in a very little is also faithful in much." Luke 16:10 (ESV)

Jesus is emphasizing the importance of being faithful in the seemingly trivial tasks and activities. Often, in business, we may feel like the little things don’t really matter in the grand scheme. The reality is small, consistent efforts lead to great results. A simple example of this –if a salesperson makes just one additional phone call a day, that is over two hundred and fifty additional calls a year. Just like the tortoise, who never stopped moving forward, every small action contributes to the larger success.

3. Trusting God’s Timing

"For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven." Ecclesiastes 3:1 (ESV)

Too often, in business, we rush into something and force things to happen. But God's timing is always perfect. Slowing down, finding the best way forward, maybe doing a cost analysis, etc. allows for the season to develop and bring clarity. The tortoise’s methodical plodding is how he was designed by his Creator. As we trust God with our efforts, we can have confidence that He will guide us at the right pace and bring success in His time.

4. Persistence

"The soul of the sluggard craves and gets nothing, while the soul of the diligent is richly supplied." Proverbs 13:4 (ESV)

Persistence, the steady effort over time, leads to abundance. The hare’s impulsiveness didn’t lead to results, but the tortoise’s consistent and persistent moving forward, one step at a time, won the race. In business, it’s easy to see the next best thing, get sidetracked with a new way of doing things, or get discouraged by looking at others who seem to be achieving faster. Yet, the Bible calls us to be diligent and patient with our work. God promises to supply what we need, when we need it.

Business Application:

- Consistency over Instant Results: Just like the tortoise, it’s important to focus on building a solid foundation in your business. Focus on providing value, nurturing relationships, and improving your craft over time. Steady growth, like slow and steady progress, will yield lasting results.

- Avoid the Trap of Comparisons: The hare’s downfall came from comparing himself to the tortoise. In business, it's easy to become discouraged by the perceived "success" of others. However, remember that your journey is uniquely yours. God has a plan for your business, and His timing and path are not the same as anyone else’s.

- Embrace Persistence: Success in business, just like in the race, doesn’t come overnight. It’s about staying faithful, trusting God, and continuing to show up, even on days when it seems like you’re not making progress.
